PREDICT
COMPLETEDPrediction of strain and fracture for complex load cases in sheet metal forming (Prediktion av försträckning och brott för komplexa lastfall inom plåtformning). A Vinnova FFI project (2020–2023) developing advanced material models, calibration techniques, and AI-based process adjustment to predict and prevent forming failures including edge cracks, necking, and springback in DP-steels and aluminium alloys. The project brings together 7 Swedish partners from industry and research.
Research Areas
Development of advanced simulation capabilities and calibration techniques for improved failure prediction accuracy.
Robust test methods for edge crack testing, trim edge quality assessment, and material characterisation of DP-steels and aluminium.
AI-based process parameter prediction and adjustment to prevent forming failures. SHAP-based explainability for model decisions.
Practical application with automotive partners. Lightweight material introduction support and production problem-solving.
Key Challenges Addressed
- Edge fractures in DP-steels and AA6XXX aluminium alloys
- Failure prediction with non-linear strain paths
- Small radius formability across all material grades
- Non-uniform sheet thickness effects
- Strain rate dependencies in forming operations
- Fast-track introduction of new lightweight materials
